io is technically a country-code TLD for the British Indian Ocean Territory, administered by Identity Digital, but it's been adopted globally by tech startups — "io" reads naturally as computing shorthand for input/output. That popularity outpaced the registry's technical infrastructure in one specific way we discovered while building this tool: .io has no entry in IANA's RDAP bootstrap registry at all, so every .io lookup on this site falls back to legacy WHOIS rather than the faster, more reliable RDAP path most gTLDs use.

That fallback works reliably, but it means .io WHOIS data is parsed from semi-structured text rather than clean JSON — if a lookup for a .io domain ever comes back as data-unavailable when you're confident it's registered, that's the most likely reason, and the Wayback Machine link is your best fallback signal in that case.

Because .io skews heavily toward startups, age here often maps loosely to company maturity — a .io domain registered several years ago with a consistent Wayback history is a reasonable (not certain) signal of an established company rather than a brand-new venture.
